Infectious Diseases Service

The Infectious Diseases Service (MI) is made up of two large groups of healthcare professionals dedicated to infections acquired either in the community (such as pneumonia and meningitis) or during admission to the hospital as a result of medical activity (surgical infections, or those related to catheters and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection).

Their main objective is to offer quality care accompanied by a teaching and research program that establishes the Service as a national and international benchmark in the training for treatment of these diseases.

Infectious diseases cover a very large group of conditions caused by living organisms, ranging from ultramicroscopic viruses to visible worms or arthropods to bacteria, fungi and protozoa. Infectious diseases remain one of the most common causes of death in developing countries and in hospitals treating acute patients. In addition, the mortality of patients with HIV infection remains higher than that of the general population.

The Service is made up of the following Units and Working Groups:

• HIV / AIDS unit, which includes 3 specific working groups on coinfection for HIV and hepatotropic viruses, liver transplantation in patients with HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.
• Working groups in:
  • Endocarditis
  • Infections in solid organ transplantation
  • Septic pathology of the musculoskeletal system
  • Diabetic foot
  • Infections in oncohematological patients, including bone marrow transplantation
  • Prevention and treatment of infections related to biological therapies (BIOINF +)
  • Fungal infections (FUNGICLINIC)
  • Complicated infections of the genitourinary tract

In addition, the Infection Service actively participates in the following Comprehensive Health Care Programs, promoted by the Hospital Management:

• Nosocomial Infection Program (currently the Infection Service holds the presidency)
• Sexual Assault Care Program
