Teaching and Training - Gastroenterology Service

Teaching is also a priority of the Gastroenterology Service in the fields of gastrointestinal oncology, inflammatory bowel disease and advanced digestive endoscopy.

The teaching activity of the Gastroenterology Service is approached from the following areas:

Subject of diseases of the Digestive System of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

The main activity focuses on the training program for Internal Medicine Residents (MIR), in both their own specialties and others in the Hospital.

The Service welcomes and trains residents in the following specialty:

Postgraduate teaching activity for external medical staff includes short-stay programs (3-6 months) aimed at specific training in certain diseases —mainly colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease— and training in endoscopic techniques. Long-term programs (1-2 years) aimed at obtaining a broader and more comprehensive training in diseases of the digestive system and highly complex endoscopy are also carried out.

Training stays are also offered for nursing staff in the areas of the High Risk Clinic for Colorectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Professionals from the Service participate as teachers in the Master's in Advanced Clinical Competences of the University of Barcelona where they direct the specialty 'Diagnostic and Therapeutic Advanced Digestive Endoscopy'. It is the only national master's degree of this nature.

The Gastroenterology Service organizes on an annual basis courses on specific topics in the areas of the High Risk Clinic for Colorectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (imaging techniques). It also organizes the following courses on a stable basis:

• Interactive Course on Special Techniques in Digestive Endoscopy and Imaging in Colon
• Endoscopy training course for residents and collaborating doctors
• Theoretical and practical course in Endoscopic Ultrasound
• Theoretical and practical course of Capsule Endoscopic and Enteroscopy

At the same time, courses are organized for nursing staff and assistants:

• Digestive Endoscopy course for nursing graduates
• Digestive Endoscopy theoretical and practical workshop for nursing assistants
