During the visit, professionals from the Hospital Clínic Liver Oncology Unit and the Hepatic Oncology (BCLC) research group led by Maria Reig gave the patients a tour of their laboratory and described the main lines of research they are working on with the goal of better understanding the mechanisms involved in the onset and development of liver cancer.
Besides the laboratory, the group also visited the IDIBAPS Biobank facilities, where the collection, processing, storage and transfer of human biological samples is coordinated.
The initiative is among the activities organised by the Liver Oncology Unit to mark Liver Cancer Awareness Month, in relation to the RETO and INMUNE4ALL projects and aims to give to the participants an overview of approaches to tackling liver cancer in all its aspects.
IDIBAPS regularly organises visits so that patients, families and patient associations can learn about its research. Volunteers and patients from the Spanish Association Against Cancer have visited the centre on several occasions, and similar activities have also been organised for people with diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease.
