Ana Garcíaa Álvarez is the leader of the new research group called Cardiomyopathies, heart failure and secondary pulmonary hypertension. Trained as a cardiologist at Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, she later specialised in advanced cardiovascular imaging at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
She also has extensive training in research methodology, having completed a Master’s degree in Statistical Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences Research and a Series of Statistics and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
She currently combines her work as a cardiologist (head of service) at Hospital Clínic and as a professor at the University of Barcelona with her role as a translational researcher at IDIBAPS. She also works very actively at Spain’s Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) and the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER). In recent years, her research has focused on pulmonary hypertension, where she has led several lines of research.
The new research group will study the mechanisms of cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrest, cardiac insufficiency or heart failure and pulmonary hypertension from a translational perspective. It is a multidisciplinary team made up of nurses, cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, all with experience in animal models, cardiac imaging, omics, molecular biology and innovative therapies. Their research ranges from basic research to multicentre clinical trials, integrating clinical practice and molecular studies.
More information is available on the group’s webpage.
