Research at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Fertility Preservation research is carried out mainly at the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), specifically in the Liver, Digestive System and Metabolism Area and the Gynaecological Endocrinology and Human Reproduction group (IDIBAPS Group 3.19).

Synergies have been formed and projects launched with other groups, mainly:

  • IDIBAPS Group 3.14: Foetal and Perinatal Medicine (led by Dr E. Gratacós). Studying foetal programming in pregnancies after in vitro fertilisation.
  • IDIBAPS Group 5.13: Molecular Biology of Reproduction and Development (led by Dr R. Oliva), including studies focused on the role of sperm in embryonic quality, with multiple articles published in this area.
  • IDIBAPS Group 5.18: Translational genomics and targeted therapies in solid tumours (led by Dr A. Prat), studying the effect of ovarian stimulation on the preservation of fertility in women with breast cancer (study awarded with the Dexeus Foundation Scholarship 2022).

There are currently several lines of research relating to fertility, with each assessing different aspects of preservation techniques and their results. The main lines of research focus on the effect of partial ovarian decortication on ovarian reserve after gonadotoxic treatment; ovarian response in patients with autoimmune diseases; histological changes after controlled ovarian stimulation and comparison of different ovarian preservation techniques via histological and tissue viability studies.
