Zika prognosis

Reading time: 1 min

In general, infection by Zika tends to be mild and the symptoms, if they appear, tend to resolve by themselves within a week.

Complications may occur in a small number of cases (less than 1%). Infection during pregnancy has been linked to microcephaly and other congenital deformities, as well as complications with the pregnancy (premature birth, miscarriage or stillbirth).

Neurological complications have also been described (mainly in adult men) such as Guillain-Barré syndrome (a nervous system disorder that causes extreme weakness), neuropathy or myelitis (inflammation of the spinal medulla).

The donations that can be done through this webpage are exclusively for the benefit of Hospital Clínic of Barcelona through Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica and not for BBVA Foundation, entity that collaborates with the project of PortalClínic.
