Symptoms of Spigelian Hernia

Reading time: 1 min

Symptoms are highly variable and non-specific, and depend on the individual patient. Generally speaking, the most common symptom is moderate abdominal pain that increases with exertion.

A protrusion usually appears below the navel, at the outer edge of the rectus muscle. It is usually soft to the touch and if pressure is exerted on it, it may go into the interior of the abdomen in a horizontal (decubitus) position. Because, unlike other hernias, it sometimes appears below the oblique muscles, it is more difficult to define as it tightens the abdominal wall.

It is sometimes considered an acute condition due to local complications.
