Recovery

Reading time: 1 min

Sexual violence impacts health and can lead to the development of distress, dysfunction or disorders. Recovery is gradual and may take time. The process can be lengthy, and professional medical, psychological and/or psychiatric help may be needed during this time.

Sexual violence is never the victim's fault.

Woman that gives support to another woman
  • Seek support from others to start the road to recovery. Support, affection and companionship of friends and family are some of the most effective resources for coping with difficult situations, and help recovery.
Food pyramid
  • Maintain healthy habits in terms of rest, diet and exercise to reduce muscle tension and improve mood. Avoid alcohol and stimulating drinks because they cause higher levels of anxiety and make it harder to sleep.
Doctor or psychologist offering professional help
  • Seek specialised medical and psychological help, as recovery is a long, gradual process that takes time. Gradually, the victim will start to feel better and regain control of their life.
