After a sexual assault

Reading time: 1 min

There are three key concepts to keep in mind after a sexual assault: protection, taking care of your health and awareness that sexual assault is a crime that can be reported.

Protection

Woman heading to a safety place
  • Head to a safe place, far from the perpetrator.
Woman calling a reliable person
  • Contact someone you trust.

Taking care of your health

Hospital building
  • Go to Accident and Emergency at the nearest hospital for a physical and emotional assessment as soon as possible. Different medical tests will be conducted, for example general, gynaecological and psychological examinations, as well as others to rule out the possibility of pregnancy and to detect sexually transmitted diseases.
Evidence of the assault
  • Retain evidence of the assault, as it will be relevant in subsequent court proceedings.

Reporting
