Research Lines of Schizophrenia

The future necessarily depends on neurobiological research and increased knowledge about the disease. Further study into the genetic bases, including both disease markers and causes, as well as the use of neuroimaging techniques in association with neuropsychological tests, will support the diagnosis with empirical and objective data.

Molecular biology will doubtlessly open the way to a greater understanding of the biological bases underlying schizophrenia and foster the long-term development of genuine antischizophrenic drugs, with new mechanisms of action, administration routes and therapeutic targets. This strategy will place a special emphasis on the negative symptoms and precognitive drugs.
