Treatment of Retinal Diseases

Reading time: 1 min

Treating diabetic retinopathy (DR) consists of diabetes care (sugar, diet, exercise). In advanced forms such as proliferative DR and diabetic macular oedema, this requires ocular treatment such as laser and/or intravitreal injections (IVI) of antiangiogenic drugs and corticosteroids.

There is no treatment for the dry (atrophic) form of AMD, except for vitamin supplements to reduce the risk of progression. The wet (neovascular) form of AMD requires IVI of antiangiogenic drugs.

Retinal detachment always requires surgery. The pars plana vitrectomy procedure is the most commonly used.
