Reading time: 1 min

Research on retinal diseases is mainly carried out at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), specifically in the Ocular Inflammation: Clinical and Experimental Studies group.

The hospital's professionals lead important projects in retina, including studies with public FIS [Health Research Fund] funding or a Marató-TV3 grant, and is part of clinical trials on new drugs sponsored by the industry. For example, in the last year alone, it has participated in more than 10 international clinical trials on new retinal drugs. In terms of research, the hospital is a pioneer in advanced imaging of retinal diseases, such as OCT angiography and the study of biomarkers of macular oedema.

Hospital Clínic is an active member of official retina collaborative entities, such as the RETICS initiative, as well as being involved with aspects associated with the retina in multiple scientific societies: European Retina Society, Spanish Retina and Vitreous Society, Spanish Ophthalmology Society and Catalan Ophthalmology Society. In short, retinal diseases are a crucial part of the present and future of Ophthalmology at Hospital Clínic in Barcelona.
