Treatment of Rabies

Reading time: 1 min

There is no treatment for rabies.

Once symptoms appear, treatment is focused on monitoring them and providing palliative care. As such, preventative measures are the only tool available to improve survival rates following an animal bite, before symptoms of the disease appear. If you are bitten, you should immediately:

Wash hands with water and a bar of soap

Thoroughly wash the wound for a few minutes with plenty of running water and soap.

Hospital building

Urgently go to hospital to assess the most suitable preventative treatment following exposure: anti-rabies serum and/or rabies vaccine.

Correct vaccination

Everyone, including those who have already been vaccinated against rabies, must go to hospital and receive extra doses of the vaccine if they have been attacked by an at-risk animal.

The donations that can be done through this webpage are exclusively for the benefit of Hospital Clínic of Barcelona through Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica and not for BBVA Foundation, entity that collaborates with the project of PortalClínic.
