Risk factors for Persistent Corneal Ulcers

Risk factors that influence the appearance of persistent corneal ulcers are:

  • Age
  • Infections, such as Herpes simplex keratitis
  • Peripheral nervous system involvement (e.g. diabetes, neurological diseases and herpes)
  • Wearing contact lenses for long periods of time
  • Chemical lesions of the cornea (due to involvement of limbal stem cells)
  • Dry eye
