Risk factors that influence the appearance of persistent corneal ulcers are:

Age
Infections, such as Herpes simplex keratitis
Peripheral nervous system involvement (e.g. diabetes, neurological diseases and herpes)
Wearing contact lenses for long periods of time
Chemical lesions of the cornea (due to involvement of limbal stem cells)
Dry eye
