Causes and risk factors of Ocular Orbit Diseases

Reading time: 1 min

Thyroid-associated orbitopathy is an autoimmune process that typically occurs in patients with autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease). However, and although less frequently, it can also occur in patients with hypothyroidism, or even in patients with normal thyroid function. Apart from suffering from thyroid disease, the main known risk factor for thyroid-associated orbitopathy is smoking.

Other types of orbital inflammation are also related to autoimmune diseases such as vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels).

Tumours of the orbit can be of many different strains, and generally increase in frequency with age.

Many eye problems can end up causing blindness and unsightly eyes, which can also be painful. In these cases, there are treatments to relieve pain and improve patients’ appearance.
