In most cases, only symptomatic treatment is necessary, with anti-inflammatories, for example.  

Antivirals can also be used, although evidence of their effectiveness is scarce.

The "classic" smallpox vaccine can significantly reduce the risk of monkeypox and prevent severe forms of the disease. However, it is not known if this applies in the circumstances of the current outbreak.

In the EU (EMA), there is both an authorised, state-of-the-art smallpox vaccine, made with live attenuated virus, called Imvanex, as well as an experimental, unauthorised one against the monkeypox virus.
