Mitral Regurgitation research

Reading time: 1 min

Given the significant prevalence of mitral regurgitation, there are numerous lines of research on it. An important part focuses on determining the best time to perform the operation and avoid sequelae, which is why clinical data, biochemical (analytical) markers and imaging (either with advanced echocardiography or other techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging) are used.

Basic research on mitral disease also focuses on studying the potential genetic component of some types of mitral regurgitation such as myxomatous degeneration.

Similarly, there are numerous clinical investigations regarding the patient's evolution according to the surgical technique used. Minimally invasive surgery is increasingly accumulating more evidence about its advantages in terms of early recovery and results. From the point of view of percutaneous interventionism, repair techniques such as edge-to-edge therapy are already fully implemented in daily practice; however, their long-term results are still being studied, as well as the selection of candidate patients for it.

Studies comparing surgical and percutaneous repair in cases of degenerative mitral regurgitation are also planned. Finally, percutaneous mitral valve replacement is still in its initial phases and various fully percutaneous implant devices are being tested in clinical trials.
