Frequently asked questions about Mitral Regurgitation

Reading time: 2 min
Is it hereditary?

There may be a certain genetic component in certain cases.

Can I lead a normal life?

In general yes; although it will depend on the degree of regurgitation. When the symptoms are limiting, the therapeutic options will have to be evaluated.

How many degrees of mitral regurgitation are there?

Trivial (unimportant), slight, moderate, severe and massive.

What is minimal or trivial regurgitation?

When the valve often does not close completely and a small reflux is noted, but within bounds considered normal. In these as well as in mild regurgitation cases, systematically monitoring the valve disease is not considered necessary.

Can I continue working with severe regurgitation?

It depends on the type of work you do. If it is a job of a significantly physical nature, it may not be appropriate. In any case, you should consult your doctor.

Can it lead to sudden death?

It is quite unlikely with a good diagnosis and follow-up.

What should I do if I have a heart murmur?

A murmur is an abnormal sound on auscultation. Your doctor will tell you the steps to follow, which will often be performing a transthoracic echocardiography, to see if the murmur is due to a problem in one of the heart valves. Not all murmurs, however, are indicative of heart disease.

Can valves with regurgitation become infected more easily?

Yes. Valves with abnormalities tend to suffer more infections (endocarditis).

Are there more valve problems today than before?

An increase in life expectancy means that more degenerative problems may occur in valves. Additionally, the greater access to diagnostic techniques also improves the diagnosis of valve problems.
