Prognosis of Liver Metastases

Half of patients with colorectal carcinoma have liver metastases during the course of the disease The prognosis of the disease mainly depends on treatment; since, without it, the average survival of patients is less than 8 months.

Surgery with curative intent together with chemotherapy have managed to increase 5-year survival to more than half of the treated population.

Can liver function be supplemented similarly to dialysis for the kidney?

There are no effective mechanisms to replace vital liver function in the medium term.  

Can you live without a liver?

No, the liver is a vital organ without which life is impossible.  This is why it is very important to be sure that the liver that remains after resection of metastases is sufficient to maintain its function.
