Treatment of Cirrhosis in Clinic

Reading time: 1 min

The Hepatology Service at the Hospital Clínic, Barcelona cares for a large number of patients with liver cirrhosis. It is currently one of the national and international reference hepatology services, both for care and research.

The service has 2 hospitalisation rooms with a total of 30 beds for patients with complications from liver cirrhosis as well as liver transplant patients. In fact, one of the peculiarities of the hospital and the service is the existence of an intensive care unit (ICU) specialising in liver diseases, with a capacity of 14 patients in total

Finally, the Hepatology service has a hepatic haemodynamics laboratory for specific techniques, such as measurement of the portal pressure gradient and placement of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS). This latter technique is indicated for severe haemorrhage cases and is carried out in some specialist centres.
