Progression of liver cirrhosis

Reading time: 1 min

The disease progresses differently according to the phase in which it is found. If the cause of compensated disease (e.g., alcohol consumption) in patients is controlled, the disease can remain stable and asymptomatic for a long time and show no associated complications.

For those patients in the decompensated phase, evolution is conditioned by the number and type of complications each person has. The elimination of the triggering factor can contribute to stabilising the disease, as well as an adequate follow-up of the treatments. Unfortunately, many patients fail to stabilise the disease; and many end up requiring a transplant or dying from complications of the disease.
