Research on Liver Cirrhosis at Clínic

The Hepatology Service at the Hospital Clínic, Barcelona is one of the leading centres in the research and treatment of liver diseases. Currently, cirrhosis research is focused on 4 fields: 

• Studying the molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of the disease. 

• Evaluating potential ‘biomarkers’ as tools to improve the prognostic evaluation of patients with cirrhosis (‘biomarkers’ are compounds found in blood or urine that demonstrate a good capacity to predict the future of the disease in patients with cirrhosis). 

• Trials with new treatments that modify the natural history of the disease 

• Designing and studying techniques that detect the disease in early phases at the population level, so liver disease can be diagnosed sooner.
