Symptoms of Laryngeal Cancer

Reading time: 1 min

The most common symptoms of laryngeal cancer are:

  • Dysphonia or hoarseness. This symptom can occur early. The patient notes persistent hoarseness with no apparent infectious cause.
  • Pain when swallowing. This is non-specific pain that can appear in different areas, either due to tumour growth or because the cervical lymph nodes are affected.
  • Cervical growth (a lump in the neck). This is usually progressive, and not particularly painful.
  • Dyspnoea (shortness of breath). Tumour growth can cause a feeling of choking by obstructing the airway.
  • Other symptoms. Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), persistent cough (due to the trachea being affected).
