Prognosis of Laryngeal Cancer

Reading time: 1 min

In early- or intermediate-stage tumours the prognosis is usually very good, with a cure rate of between 80% and 97%. Most patients preserve all or part of the larynx. Vocal quality depends on the local spread of the tumour, and the treatment that was necessary.

Advanced tumours have an intermediate prognosis, with a cure rate of 50-80%. In many cases, total removal of the larynx is necessary. This involves a more complex postoperative period, as well as a definitive cervical stoma (cannula). For the patient to be able to communicate, a new method of vocal production is needed.
