Risk factors associated with Kidney Cancer

A number of risk factors have been identified for the development of this tumour. Some are related to lifestyle:  

Another risk factor is heredity: 

  • A person with a first degree relative with kidney cancer has an increased risk of developing it.  

Also, chronic renal failure (CRF) and specifically acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) are important factors in the development of RC. 

A series of hereditary syndromes are associated with kidney tumours, such as:  

  • Von Hippel-Lindau disease. 

  • Hereditary papillary renal carcinoma. 

  • Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome. 

  • Kidney cancer syndrome. 

  • Hereditary leiomyomatosis.
