Research into HIV at the Hospital Clínic

HIV/AIDS research is carried out at the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) in the Biological aggression and response mechanisms area within the AIDS and HIV infection group.

The Clínic has over 40 ongoing clinical trials and research projects. The main lines of research focus on: 

  • Immunopathogenesis of HIV infection and the development of preventive and therapeutic vaccines.
  • Retrovirology: new immunogen production and HIV reservoir.
  • Primary HIV infection: eradication strategies and functional cure.
  • Opportunistic diseases: tuberculosis, human papillomavirus and anal cancer.
  • Solid organ transplants in patients with HIV.
  • Epidemiological cohort-based studies (PISCIS, ART-CC, COHERE, EuroSida. SONDA-C).
  • Antiretroviral treatment: safety and efficacy of new antiretroviral drugs. Resistance studies. New antiretroviral strategies.
  • Prevention strategies: PEP and PrEP.
  • Incidence and management of events that do not define AIDS. Ageing. STDs
  • Cardiovascular disease in patients with HIV. Pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and management.
  • STDs in patients with HIV. Epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
  • Consumption of sexualised drugs. Early diagnosis and treatment of HIV, HCV and other STDs in this high-risk population. Chemsex multidisciplinary management.
  • HCV and HBV coinfection. Safety and efficacy of new direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) against HCV. Long-term follow-up of patients treated with DAAs. Strategies to eradicate HCV. Risk factors, early diagnosis and treatment of HCV reinfection.
  • New healthcare strategies: telemedicine, healthcare unit shared with primary care and OPAT programmes.
  • Pregnancy and HIV.
  • HIV in adolescents.
  • Anal cancer prevention programme in immunosuppressed individuals.
  • Chemsex management in the MSM population.
