Research into FASD at Hospital Clínic

The Childhood and Environment Research Group (Grup d'Investigació Infància i Entorn, or GRIE) at the Neonatology Department is part of the Agustí Pi i Sunyer Research Institute (Institut d'Investigació Agustí Pi i Sunyer, or IDIBAPS), and conducts research into FASD that includes various projects:

  1. Developing clinical practice guidelines specific to FASD (both the guidelines created by the group in the context of research project results as well as those created in collaboration with the Local Government of Catalonia).
  2. Studies into epigenetics and markers of damage from exposure to alcohol during pregnancy.
  3. Prenatal and postnatal neuroimaging studies in newborns who have experienced prenatal alcohol exposure.
  4. Prevalence studies in specific populations, such as children adopted from Eastern European countries and in the local school population.
  5. Developing FASD training activities for professionals.
  6. Implementing clinical trials with different therapeutic candidates, for example nutritional supplements.
  7. Developing animal models for the study of FASD.
  8. Studies into the economic cost of FASD.
  9. Developing an app that includes a diagnostic tool for FASD and a therapeutic tool based on virtual reality.
