Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Prognosis

Reading time: 1 min

It is not possible to recover from the neurodevelopmental damage caused by exposure to alcohol during pregnancy, although it can be improved in functional terms. The long-term prognosis is determined by various factors. For example, early diagnosis means it is possible to adapt expectations around living and education, and it also allows the most specific interventions possible to be implemented, in particular neurocognitive and behavioural interventions in all areas of life: at home, at school, in the workplace, etc.

This is a chronic condition, and as a result these impairments will last throughout adulthood and may translate into a range of secondary disabilities such as mental health problems, impacted school experiences, legal problems, institutionalisation, sexual misconduct, substance abuse, dependency and difficulty entering the world of work.
