Reading time: 1 min
Elderly person in bed with fever

Symptomatic treatment. This treatment is indicated to alleviate the symptoms in otherwise healthy patients with a mild to moderate infection. Patients should keep hydrated, control the fever and rest.

Medicines, pills

Antiviral therapy. Antiviral therapy is indicated in patients with a severe infection, whether because they have risk factors or a weakened immune system which increases the risk of developing complications. Treatment should be initiated as soon as possible; within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms to obtain the greatest clinical benefit.

Drug crossed out

Antibiotics do not work against flu. There is no reason for flu patients to take antibiotics, since influenza is caused by a virus, not a bacterium.
