Causes and Risk Factors of Congenital Heart Disease

Reading time: 1 min

Most cases of congenital heart disease are sporadic, but some are hereditary.

Transmission of the vast majority of these diseases is low, but it is advisable to perform a foetal echocardiogram in the second trimester (16-22 weeks) at an expert centre.

Patients with congenital heart disease should prevent the main cardiovascular risk factors: smoking, hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes mellitus. Physical exercise suitable for each type of congenital cardiopathy should be recommended. Leading a sedentary lifestyle out of fear about the condition should be avoided, as in the long term, this leads to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease.
