Living with Achalasia

Reading time: 1 min

Once most patients receive definitive treatment, they can lead a normal life.

However, because the oesophagus has lost mobility, a series of recommendations have to be followed:

Sausages and down arrow indicating lower consumption

Avoid irritating and fatty foods.

Chicken leg

Avoid foods with a very solid texture (e.g. hard, lumpy or crunchy).

A plate of chicken, cutlery and a clock: mealtimes

Eat a light dinner early to prevent acid reflux into the oesophagus.

Person holding hand to chest, with chest pain or chest pain

Be careful with drinking hot and cold drinks and avoid stressful or nervous situations. These can cause painful chest spasms.
