Frequently asked questions about Achalasia

Reading time: 2 min
Can I get pregnant if I have achalasia?

Yes, you just need monitoring and care to avoid reflux, but there is no contraindication for pregnancy.

Can having achalasia cause oesophageal cancer?

It is a risk factor for oesophageal cancer, so it is recommended that the medical team perform periodic gastroscopy studies.

Can I eat normally after achalasia surgery, both surgical (Heller myotomy) and endoscopic (botulinum toxin, pneumatic dilation or POEM)?

Immediately after any of the above surgical treatments, you have to eat crushed foods and progressively add solid foods to your diet.

What is the best treatment for achalasia?

This depends on the type of achalasia. In general terms, types I and II respond well to treatment with pneumatic dilation, Heller myotomy, and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). However, POEM is the indicated treatment for type III.

Do I have to take stomach protectors after surgery?

Yes. In most cases, you need to protect the oesophagus from reflux, but it depends on the evolution of the patient.

After achalasia treatment, do I need to take any type of medication?

In some cases, patients may have gastroesophageal reflux after treatment, especially with POEM, so taking stomach protectors is necessary.

Can I play sport if I have achalasia?

Yes. You can do any sport; however, you should avoid lifting heavy weights.

After achalasia treatment, will I still get dysphagia?

Yes. It may happen, but it is not expected. If it occurs, it suggests the treatment was inadequate and a second operation may be required.

After achalasia treatment, will I still get chest pain?

Yes. Possibly due to the presence of reflux or, on some occasions, because the treatment of achalasia was inadequate and a second management therapy may need to be implemented.

Can I use any dietary additive to supplement my diet?

Yes. You should consult a nutritionist to assess your individual needs for dietary supplements, in case of low weight or decreased nutritional values.
