Pressure Sores
Reading time: 1 min
Ulcers, sores and open wounds are skin lesions caused by prolonged pressure on the same area. The causes of these wounds can be due to age, immobility, certain illnesses, such as thrombosis, obesity, malnutrition and urinary or faecal incontinence.
How to prevent them?
- The carer should make daily observations of the dependent person’s skin, checking for the appearance of any blotches, cracks or excess paleness
- Wash the skin with neutral soaps, then rinse and dry without rubbing. Do not use products containing alcohol
- Leave the area to dry for a few minutes
- Moisturise the skin with creams or oils, and massage the area to stimulate blood flow
- Use clothing made from natural fabrics
- Encourage the person to walk, take exercise and change posture at least every 3-4 hours
- Use heel and elbow protectors
- If any warning signs appear, contact the health professional to assess the situation, if necessary indicating the specifics of any care given
