Organization - Hemotherapy and Hemostasis Service

The Service is structured in two sections that have the following care services: Day Hospital, Outpatient Consultations, Inpatient and Outpatient Interconsultations and the Apheresis Area, integrated in the ICNU.

Day Hospital

The following activities are carried out in the Day Hospital:

  • Antithrombotic treatment. Comprehensive care for the patient with anticoagulation, incuding education, perioperative management of surgery or invasive procedures and management of complications. There is also self-monitoring of vitamin K antagonists with formation, periodic reassessment and recalibration of coagulometers. We treat daily some 200 highest-risk patients in the integral health area of the Clinic, and about 60,000 guidelines are carried out annually.

  • Patients with haemophilia, severe haemorrhagic disease or thrombotic disease. Comprehensive patient care. Special care is given to cases of active or recent bleeding. Administration of blood products and other medications. Attention to acute situations or intercurrency management.

More than 1,500 patients are treated at the Day Hospital each year, and 24-hour continuing care is provided for urgent consultations

External consultations

Outpatients with coagulation problems or erythrocyte pathology are treated here. We perform diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease, of patients with hemorrhagic diseases of plasma or platelet origin and of patients with poor obstetric results and suspected thrombophilia. In the erythropathology consultation, the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with rare erythrocyte pathology are carried out.

About 1,800 external consultations are done each year.

Intra-hospital and out-of-hospital consultations

These are carried out in all areas of the Service, both for the Hospital and for the Primary Care Centers or other Hospitals. About 6,500 interconsultations are held each year.

Aferesi area

The process of therapeutic apheresis is comprehensively addressed. It includes prior assessment and performance of procedures and extractions in patients undergoing plasma replacement or cytoapheresis. Treatment is also iplemented to mobilize hematopoietic progenitors in peripheral blood.

Each year 1,000 therapeutic apheresis and 120 mobilizations and obtentions of hematopoietic progenitors are performed.
