This Wednesday, Newsweek magazine, in partnership with Statista, published the ranking of the world’s best hospitals for 2025. In this year’s list, the Hospital Clínic Barcelona maintained its outstanding position, ranking 59th in the world and consolidating its position as the third best hospital in Spain and the best in Catalonia. This ranking is based on recommendations by medical professionals, patient survey results, and key medical performance indicators. These recognitions reflect the Hospital Clínic Barcelona’s ongoing commitment to excellence in healthcare, research, teaching and innovation, together with quality in patient care.
This year’s ranking lists the best hospitals in 30 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries were selected based on multiple comparability factors, such as standard of living, life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.
Newsweek’s ranking is based on an extensive evaluation process, including an online survey of thousands of medical experts (doctors, hospital managers, and healthcare professionals), patient experience data, hospital quality metrics, and a Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Implementation Survey. PROMs are standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.
People’s health, the driving force behind the Clínic
With over 100 years of history, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a leading public healthcare provider in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia and the world, clearly committed to excellence in its three main areas of action: healthcare, research, and teaching. The Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a public consortium made up of the Government of Catalonia (CatSalut) and the University of Barcelona. The Clínic is a community hospital for its area of influence, Barcelona Esquerra, with a population of 540,000 inhabitants and, at the same time, operates as a care facility for highly complex cases. The latter function involves treating patients in Catalonia, mainly in the areas of the Vallès Oriental and Osona and, for certain specific procedures, patients in other autonomous communities across Spain.
The Clínic covers virtually all medical and surgical specialities and leads the way in partnerships with several healthcare institutions to offer top quality patient care. It has a long-standing tradition in research, which makes it an institution of reference, both nationally and internationally. Most of the research work is coordinated by the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). IDIBAPS is a research centre of excellence, which deals with both the most common and rare diseases. It is the centre with highest level of scientific production in Spain and is one of the top 25 worldwide. At the same time, the Clínic carries out important teaching work at undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels, which includes the training of resident doctors and the organization of continuous training activities. The university training activities are particularly closely linked to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Barcelona.
