Learning about women in science is vital to overcoming gender stereotypes in STEAM fields. To support this goal, the exhibition Científiques catalanes 2.0 [Catalan Women Scientists2.0] was created in 2020. The show features panels introducing 24 women researchers in Catalonia who are also engaged in communicating science to society with a view to increasing its social impact and contributing to creating female role models. Cristina Fillat, leader of the IDIBAPS Gene therapy and cancer group, and Amàlia Lafuente, a professor at the University of Barcelona and an IDIBAPS researcher until her departure last July, are among the women in science presented in the show.
The exhibition describes the scientific careers and professional merits of the researchers, as well as their current lines of work. But it also reveals a more personal side, noting their hobbies and a quote that defines them. Since February 2020, more than 25 entities – research centres, universities, institutes, libraries, community centres and so on – have hosted this travelling show. The exhibition also provides a framework for organising parallel events, such as round tables and presentations of books related to gender equality and the gender perspective in science.
Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which coincided with the first months of the exhibition, an online version of the panels was created, as well as a game, to ensure that the public health emergency did not prevent those interested from discovering these women scientists.
IDIBAPS will host the exhibition from April 11 to May 12 in the foyer of the Esther Koplowitz Centre, where images from the photography competition are usually presented.
The exhibitionCientífiques catalanes 2.0 [Catalan Women Scientists2.0] is a project coordinated by the Gender Perspective Group of the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC). The Group is formed by more than 20 members, all professionals in the fields of communication, dissemination and journalism, as well as scientific research. The Catalan Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC) is a non-profit association constituted in 1990 whose members are professionals and stakeholders in scientific communication, dissemination and journalism. The ACCC pursues the mission of promoting, disseminating, extending and enhancing scientific communication in the Catalan-speaking world.
