Main lines of research on urinary tract infection

Reading time: 1 min

There are different lines of research in urinary tract infection:

At the urological level, one of the most attractive lines of research is the study of the relationship between the urinary microbiota and the production of urinary lithiasis.

The discovery of the urobiome (stable microbiota that reside in the urinary tract) has broken the established paradigm regarding the sterility of urine, since it was believed there were no microorganisms in the urine unless there was urinary infection.

There are studies that indicate that the composition and structure of the urobiome will impact on infectious stones, but also on non-infectious ones, with these organisms having the capacity to act as a nucleus and promoter of stone disease.

From the point of view of infectious diseases, the main lines of research focus on identifying the pathophysiological mechanisms by which recurrent urinary tract infection occurs, to find effective and lasting therapeutic solutions over time.

Intestinal microbiota transplantation could be an important therapy in selected cases. In addition, the study and evaluation of specific vaccines for the most prevalent germs is another field in development, due to the large volume of patients treated for this problem. Finally, different projects are being pursued to optimise the use of antimicrobials and thus reduce the development of multi-resistant bacteria.
