Childbirth and Pregnancy at the Clínic

Reading time: 3 min

Hospital Clínic-BCN Natal has 20 years of experience in natural childbirth, with the maternal education courses offered to mothers being centred on this philosophy.

We follow the hospital Childbirth Care and Respect Programme (PART), to offer minimally medicalised, respectful and physiological birth experiences. This birth plan encourages family involvement in decision-making, taking their needs and preferences into account at all times. The plan is available to women whose pregnancy and subsequent birth is considered low- or medium-risk.

Pregnancy at the Clínic

During pregnancy, expectant mothers receive personalised follow-up with their midwife and are offered courses to support them in motherhood and neonatal care, covering topics such as:

  • Women's empowerment during pregnancy; highlighting actions that support foetal neurodevelopment.
  • Childbirth preparation tools.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Preparing the newborn baby’s environment.
  • Awareness about the importance of the pelvic floor.

All these topics are covered in the following workshops and courses:

  • Maternity support programme: group sessions led by a midwife where birth, postpartum and breastfeeding information is given. Body awareness is a part of these sessions.
  • Family Education: group sessions led by a paediatric nurse to help the mother and partner prepare for the arrival of their baby.

Personalised pregnancy

From the outset, the hospital is informed of the expectant mother's situation from the electronic medical record shared with the Primary Care Centre (CAP), to address each case individually. The hospital also offers family information sessions to learn about the Maternitat.

During pregnancy, families receive advice on creating a birth plan and are informed about the different programmes and workshops they can attend, with various experts explaining topics related to the arrival of the newborn.

The hospital also offers a personalised programme for those mothers who are past 37 weeks pregnant and have a low- to medium-risk pregnancy. Known as "Call the Midwife", it is aimed at reducing the level of stress that often occurs when labour is approaching and to make this process easier.

Childbirth at the Clínic

The Maternitat offers a warm, intimate and pleasant environment. It has an area for low- to medium-risk women with 4 dedicated delivery rooms, 2 of which have bathtubs. They are all equipped with automatic systems for music playback and adjustable light and temperature settings. Cameras have also been installed so that the baby's birth can be viewed on a screen, if desired. Mothers are also allowed to bring their own device to record this moment.

The expectant mother can choose someone as their companion. If a second companion is needed, a request must be signed in advance during pre-delivery visits, and will be granted if possible. Mothers can bring anything they need to feel comfortable and relaxed, such as their own clothing or pillows.

First moments of life

The Maternitat provides 30 free single rooms with a bed for a companion.

Immediately after birth, skin-to-skin contact with the newborn is encouraged and breastfeeding support is provided.

The usual stay for a vaginal delivery is 24 hours and 48-72 hours for a caesarean section, depending on progress. A contact telephone number is provided for the first 24 hours if you have any questions.

For women with pelvic floor risk factors, a postpartum evaluation consultation is available, with a referral to the hospital's Pelvic Floor Department if more specific treatment is necessary. Additionally, for women with breastfeeding risk factors, there is also a consultation for pre- and postpartum evaluations, as well as a referral pathway if a specific one is required.

During the postpartum period, several postnatal courses are offered:

  • Penguin method: An innovative method that provides families with tools to support their children, based on knowledge, equality and respect.
  • Baby first aid workshop: Theoretical and practical session to provide families with knowledge and resources in an emergency situation.
