After delivery

Reading time: 1 min

After delivery, parents and other family members may see and stay with the newborn for as long as they need. Mementos may be taken (e.g. photos, palm or footprints) and a farewell ceremony may be performed.

The centre's professionals offer information on funeral options and administrative procedures. Medical discharge depends on the mother’s condition; however, she can generally go home within a few hours of delivery.

Perinatal grief

For a mother and father, the loss of a child is one of the most tragic and painful experiences in their lives. It is common to experience strong emotional shock and a mixture of contradictory feelings. It is healthy to cry, share your emotions with people you trust and with other affected parents (e.g. in perinatal bereavement groups) and to give yourself space and time to accept the thoughts, emotions and reactions that appear. Inevitably, you have to go through the grieving process to recover emotionally and to keep your lost child alive in your memory.

Each person's grieving and recovery process is very individual to them.

The accompaniment of professionals in this process is advisable. Promoting adequately experienced grief and not denying it can help, not only the parents, but also the whole family.
