Evolution of Osteoporosis

Reading time: 1 min

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease and its most significant consequence is the risk of suffering bone fractures. This affects the actual patients, their family environment and society as a whole; therefore both a healthcare and social response is required.

In this respect, treatment aims to increase bone mass and quality, while also significantly reducing the risk of fractures. We cannot consider curing the disease completely, but improvement is definitely possible. Each patient and each drug must be assessed individually to achieve these objectives.

Active role of the pacient. The variable nature of the symptoms, the chronic evolution of the disease, the need to follow long-term treatments and the potential after effects of any fractures all produce several complications in patients’ lives. Patients must actively participate in their therapy in order to improve the disease process and reduce its impact.
