In 80% of cases, newborns start with a clonic (focal) seizure, which may or may not be associated with hypotonia and an altered state of consciousness, but this is much less frequent. Recurrent apnoea appears in 10% who may also have non-specific symptoms, such as difficulty eating and irritability.
