Causes of Neonatal Cerebral Arterial Infarction

Reading time: 1 min

The causes of neonatal cerebral arterial infarction appear to be a complex interaction of various maternal, foetal and neonatal factors.

Maternal risk factors include a history of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, lupus erythematosus, dehydration or coagulation factor disorders, for example. Male newborns with a family history of seizures and epilepsy, as well as prolonged rupture of membranes or maternal fever, among others, are also at higher risk.

NCI is considered to result from emboli from extracranial vessels: cervical, heart, umbilical vein or placenta.

Early detection and diagnosis of NCI improves the long-term prognosis as it allows for earlier intervention.
