What is Japanese Encephalitis?

Reading time: 1 min

Japanese encephalitis is a disease caused by a virus (flavivirus) that is transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes, and which causes inflammation of the nervous system.

In regions where the disease is common (endemic), it mainly affects children, as adults tend to acquire natural protection over their lives.

It is an uncommon disease for travellers. It can affect all ages equally, and there is a general incidence of less than 1 case per million travellers.
