Treatment of the Fatty Liver Disease at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Patients with fatty liver disease are followed up in a consultation at the Hospital Clínic specialising in the diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of this disease.

All the features and genetic variants of patients are analysed from the moment the disease is diagnosed.

All available non-invasive diagnostic tools are used. When required, a transjugular liver biopsy (obtaining tissue from the liver) and liver catheterisation are performed to assess portal pressure (blood pressure in the leading vein, which carries blood from the intestine to the liver). These tests evaluate the prognosis of these patients. At the Clínic, the percentage of transplants due to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has doubled in recent years.

Patients are invited to participate in available clinical trials, which is entirely voluntary. The hepatologists at the Clínic collaborate with the Functional Obesity Unit and offer bariatric surgery to morbidly obese patients who are candidates, as well as dietary advice to those who cannot receive it.
