Causes and risk factors of the Diseases of the Eyelids

Reading time: 1 min

Most alterations of the eyelids are due to aging.

  • Facial dystonia (blepharospasm and other types of dystonia). Although the cause of their appearance is unknown, it is believed that the origin lies in brain alterations similar to those occurring in Parkinson's disease.
  • Aberrant regeneration of facial and hemifacial spasm. Alterations due to disorders of the facial nerve.
  • Malignant tumors (skin cancer). They can be related to sun exposure, and although rarer, to other types of radiation, chemical substances, etc.

In cases where aging is not the main cause, there are some triggering or aggravating factors:

  • Excessive manipulation of the eyelids (rubbing).
  • Continued use of contact lenses, which can cause eyelid laxity leading to malpositions.

To prevent palpebral malignant tumors it is important to avoid excessive exposure to the sun, use sunscreen creams and approved sunglasses.
