Diagnosis of Chikungunya

Diagnostic suspicion is based on the presence of compatible symptoms and a history of being in areas where chikungunya is transmitted. 

The diagnosis is confirmed by detecting genetic material of the virus in the blood, which is present in early stages of the disease, and also by detecting specific antibodies to the virus, which appear in the subsequent days and weeks.
