ToolBox, IDIBAPS Talk Series: Working with your faculty on sucessful startup company formation

Esteve Auditorium, Esther Koplowitz Centre. C/Rosselló 149-153, 08036 Barcelona.

On Monday, October 7th, at 3 p.m., will take place the session Working with your faculty on successful startup company formation, led by Colm Lawler, Senior Manager at the Technology and Innovation Development Office at Boston Children's Hospital.

Colm Lawler joined the Technology and Innovation Development Office (TIDO) at Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) in 2022 as a Senior Licensing Manager. He has been involved with intellectual property management, industry-academy collaborations and IP licensing since 1996 and before joining BCH, held positions in a number of organizations, including BioResearch Ireland, Michigan State University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Tufts University and finally the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Colm received both his B.Sc. and Ph.D. qualifications from University College Dublin (Ireland) and is also a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP). Over the course of his career he has been an invited speaker and/or moderator on industry-academia research collaborations, intellectual property management, start-up company formation and licensing best practices and is a listed author on 7-peer reviewed technology transfer publications.

In this session, we see how as more researchers from universities and hospitals venture into the dynamic and fast-paced world of life-science startups, they often enter the complex environment of business, finance and law which can be a daunting process. A new startup founder faces numerous (often unforeseen) obstacles when seeking to commercialize their research from their host institution. This presentation lays out some of those critical issues and provides helpful tips for faculty members seeking to commercialize their research via a startup company.

This activity is open to people from inside and outside the institution. It is an hybrid event; it will be possible to participate directly in the Esteve Auditorium of Esther Koplowitz Centre or via Zoom. To access digitally it is necessary to register in advance to receive a personal connection link, there is time until the same day to do so.

After the session and by previous request, the members of the IDIBAPS community can participate in a meeting with the expert to talk about topics like startup companies, IP management, working with industry or other similar subjects.

This activity is organized by IDIBAPS with the support of Clinic Barcelona hospital. The Toolbox, IDIBAPS Talks Series are promoted by the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) of the institution.
