Research - Unit of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer research has two different sides, the clinical, based on clinical trials in which new, more effective and less toxic drugs are investigated, and the basic and translational, which is carried out in the laboratory.

The Unit's research is carried out through the Oncology and Hematology Area of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), specifically through the group:

Regarding a clinical trial, patients may be invited to participate in a study about which they have previously been informed. If they agree, they then sign an informed consent that ensures that the patient receives all the necessary information about the proposed treatment, its possible benefits and side effects.

Translational research is essential to understanding why tumor cells become so aggressive and why patients with different tumors need different treatments.

Current projects of the Unit

The Gynecology Service is working on two projects:

  • "Effect of ovarian stimulation with aromatase inhibitors on the breast tissue of the patient with cancer".
  • "Project to assess the role of the sentinel node in N + patients after neoadjuvant treatment", in which the Nuclear Medicine and Radiology services also collaborate.

Scholarships

The Breast Cancer Unit presents its research projects in various calls for funding grants in order to increase its resources and dedicate them to research.

Clinical Trials

The Breast Cancer Unit carries out numerous clinical trials, dedicated to two principal fields of research: early breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer.
