Teaching and Training - Medical Oncology Service

The Medical Oncology Service is fully involved in the teaching and training of healthcare professionals, both in the hospital and in other centers, as well as residents in MIR training in the following specialty:

The Service's activity in the field of teaching is divided into two main groups:

In the context of the Clínic's campus at the University of Barcelona, a large part of the Service's team is involved in the teaching of the subject 'Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy', which is at the core of the 5th year of the degree in Medicine. At the same time, it offers the possibility of carrying out final degree projects (TFG).

The Service offers two places each year for the specialization in Medical Oncology. The duration is five years. This means that the Service has a total of 10 doctors performing as residents.

Nurses in the service are also linked to the UB, either as teachers in the Nursing Degree or in specialization master’s degrees such as their own in senology or advanced practice. Also, the possibility of carrying out final degree projects (TFG) is offered.

These are weekly sessions, lasting about 45 minutes, and are divided into three types:

• Refresher Sessions in Medical Oncology. The healthcare professional in charge of the presentation presents the latest developments concerning a specific disease of which he is a specialist.
• Clinical Trial Sessions. The healthcare professional (principal investigator or sub-researcher) is in charge of describing a clinical trial that is either currently, or soon to be, underway at the hospital.
• Clinical Case Sessions. The healthcare team in the hospitalization area comments on specific cases that, due to their complexity or relevance, are of special interest.
• The refresher sessions in Medical Oncology and Clinical Trials are accredited by the Catalan Council for Continuing Education of the Health Professions.
• Nursing sessions. The service professionals themselves, or their collaborators, present the latest updates concerning the nursing care offered to onco-hematological patients. These sessions are accredited by the Catalan Council for Continuing Education of the Health Professions.
• TCAIs (annual) conferences. The service professionals themselves, or their collaborators, present the latest updates on Nursing Assistant Care Technicians for Onco-Hematology Patients. These sessions are accredited by the Catalan Council for Continuing Education of the Health Professions.
• Specific training for nursing professionals and TCAIs.

• C17. As part of its strategy of strengthening the relationship with the various centers of the C-17, since 2014 the Service has begun to conduct and coordinate symposia related to cancers of the breast and lung, urooncology, immunooncology, etc., in collaboration with other services and hospitals of the C-17 network.
• Course in immuno-oncology for nurses. The first immuno-oncology training course for nurses was launched in 2017. This course continues on an annual basis.
