The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) has awarded one of their research grants to the Gene Regulation Group at IDIBAPS, an ICREA group.
The Project, to be carried out during 2011-2012, will study the role of ZEB1 and ZEB2 in oncogenic transformation and the invasive and metastatic capacity of carcinomas. The Gene Regulation Group at IDIBAPS has been working on the characterization of these transcription factors for the last 15 years. Recently, ZEB1 and ZEB2 have gained great relevance in the field of molecular oncology as they are not only key regulators of the metastatic capacity of tumors but they determine phenotypic and functional stemness in normal and tumor stem cells as well as the resistance of cancer cells to chemoterapy drugs. The funded Project will aim to determine the molecular mechanisms involved in ZEB functions using a wide range of in vitro and in vivo techniques.
